The studio A44 Games, which released a good action movie Ashen, is preparing for the release of its new project – the plot-oriented soulslice Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, which will be released in a month, on July 18. We played a preview and demo version of the project, and are ready to share our impressions.

  • Developer: A44 Games
  • Publisher: Kepler Interactive
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5 , Xbox Series X|S
  • Release date: July 18, 2024

From the first frames, it is clear that Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn differs from the Souls games and many imitators in its emphasis on story. There are quite a lot of cut scenes and dialogues here, the game quickly immerses you in the history of a world that fights evil, and the main character does not become a silent avatar of the player, actively participating in the dialogues.

Soon after the events begin, a warrior named Nor acquires a companion – the fox-like creature Enki, who will not only accompany her on her journey , but will also provide assistance, both in moving around the world and in battles.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn pleases with a pleasant movement: there is excellent character control, a convenient movement system with small elements of parkour , which introduces you to a state of “flow” due to its intuitiveness and simplicity. So far, the modest set of animations is confusing, but this nuance can be corrected for release – and if not, it’s unlikely that anyone will be very upset.

The combat here is quite good : the girl wields melee weapons and firearms, blocks blows and counterattacks, dodges and uses special skills. Enki is actively involved in the battle: for example, he can “curse” the enemy and make him vulnerable to a special attack, or help quickly knock down his shield.

At the same time, the developers’ desire to balance the combat system is already obvious. Thus, the Nor pistol has a limited number of charges, just as the attacks of the companion creature are not endless. To replenish them, you will have to attack enemies with a blade in your hands – in general, do not expect to sit at a safe distance, shooting at monsters and dodging their blows.

As in Souls, by killing opponents, the heroine accumulates experience points, and the rate of their accumulation increases if the player fights effectively and does not receive damage. If the heroine dies, she will lose all the points she received, but will be able to return them by returning to the place of death. You can invest experience in leveling up the warrior: the skill tree is divided into several branches, which allows you to develop Nora in accordance with your play style: focus on firearms, rely on magic , or give preference to good old steel.

In addition, the girl receives currency in adventures, which can be spent on new equipment. It will be kindly provided by merchants in villages , but they must first be freed from monsters, after which coffee shops, fast travel points and additional quests will open.

The key difference between the title and similar games was the ability to select a difficulty mode: for those who want to enjoy the plot, an easy mode is provided, and hardcore fans will be able to be content with increased difficulty. This is how A44 Games gives various categories of gamers the opportunity to get acquainted with their project, and not just those who have completed all parts of Dark Souls and ELDEN RING in addition.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn looks nice – modest, budget, but cute. The game may not be a hit, but it does feel like a good time to play. We will be able to see whether this is true or not soon – the release will take place on July 18.
